Oh, I didn’t see you there with that giant sowrd! Dungeon ExplorerĪs big as the world may be, FromSoftware ensured that the countless smaller dungeons across the vast lands were faithful to the usual Dark Souls experience. The new checkpoint and fast-travel options make moving through the land much easier and help minimize frustration when dying multiple times against the same enemy. But also, an item that grants you extra weight load exists and can help you with spending Runes (this games’ souls currency). Equipment load is now connected to strength, which makes a lot of sense. For example, do I use magic as an additional damage dealer, do I use it for distance, is it even possible to attack with magic in a small room? Are the enemies slow enough for a broad sword, or do I need a dagger? Can I use my horse, or should I summon help and not use my horse? This is but a small fraction of questions that constantly went through my mind depending on the challenge ahead. I usually stay true to one weapon and playstyle during my Dark Souls adventures, but Elden Ring makes it very easy to switch up styles and equipment, and I’ve adapted my loadout a few times during my time with the network test. Naturally, these skills won’t be effective in boss battles, but they can be very useful against most other enemies. This new mechanic offers a lot of freedom with stealth kills and sleeping arrows, especially in open-world areas. The new stealth mechanic takes a lot of inspiration from Sekiro and works nicely against enemy groups or entire camps. Additionally, the new skill system that lets you combine various weapon arts/skills to almost every weapon offers new and exciting opportunities to stretch your build and combat readiness. Magic seems to be not as overpowered as in Demon’s Souls but far more viable and accessible than in Dark Souls 3 or other entries in the series. I’ll fight you how I want! Unmatched gameplay varietyĮlden Ring packs the widest variety of gameplay styles in the Souls series for combat, stealth or magic use. It’s ultimately a tiny gameplay design change, but with a massive impact for the players. For example, a giant is sweeping at you with a huge club? No problem, just jump over it, no big deal. It adds a lot of options, just as it did in Sekiro, and I’m delighted FromSoftware took this route.Īdditionally, you can climb almost any structure by jumping on it, which opens up secret paths, new perspectives and advantages for ranged combat or even a stealth opportunity for an invading phantom. Not only does it open up the world to explore, but it also adds a tactical element to combat situations. I cannot stress enough how this changes the gameplay for the typical Dark Souls veteran. Elden Ring also adds the feature to jump to the main character and provide a horse with a double-jump that genuinely opens up the Lands Between.Įxploring Elden Ring’s world with the added benefit of jumping comes close to the ability to climb in games like Breath of the Wild. Yes, we can jump! Something that fascinated me while playing Sekiro was the sheer freedom of movement. To infinity and beyond! Verticality and Double-Jumping Let’s dive right into the aspects that mark Elden Ring as the next logical and impressive step for FromSoftware. Instead, I want to highlight the things that make Elden Ring unique, in my opinion, as a fan of the FromSoftware for over ten years now. You can easily find tons of videos and gameplay footage on Youtube so I won’t go into any generally available knowledge about the game. FromSoftware finally gave us a chance to get our hands on Elden Ring and see how they’ve approached the open-world design with their established game mechanics.
